A Festival of Lights for Young and Old
Christmas Lights Mechelen: Every year, Mechelen (Belgium) transforms into a fairytale winter wonderland. Thousands of lights transform the historic downtown into an enchanting spectacle. Stroll through the cobblestone streets, where the smell of mulled wine and freshly baked waffles fills the air. Admire the beautiful window displays that invite shopping and discover the city’s hidden corners.
Over the past few weeks, the staff at Blachere Illumination has been hard at work installing the end-of-year lighting. The lighting and the concept is new compared to previous years. For example, buildings such as the Town Hall and the Alderman’s House, among others, are illuminated in a different way.

“Year-end lighting in Mechelen is much more than an atmospheric backdrop. It is an investment in the attractiveness of our city. It makes people feel drawn to stay here longer. Especially at a time when online shopping is gaining popularity, this atmosphere offers something you can’t experience behind a screen. The interplay of thousands of lights, inviting storefronts and our historic environment, creates a unique experience that leads people to our merchants and restaurants. Good end-of-year lighting and decoration, makes the city more enjoyable. It makes shopping during the dark winter months more cozy. More atmosphere and coziness lead to more passage“, said Geert Milis, president of merchant organization Mechelen MeeMaken.
